Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announces the newly signed agreement between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This agreement marks the successful conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU pact. Major provisions of the deal include:

- A 40% pay rise for academic staff.

- Enhanced pension packages: Retiring professors (at age 70) will now receive pensions equal to their final annual salary.

- A revamped funding framework for universities, ensuring dedicated resources for research, libraries, laboratories, equipment, and staff training.

- The establishment of a National Research Council (NRC), set to allocate at least 1% of Nigeria’s GDP toward academic research.

- Greater institutional independence and academic freedom for universities.

- Academic leaders such as Deans and Provosts will be elected, and only professors will be eligible for these roles.

- The agreement came into force on January 1, 2026, and will be reviewed after three years.

- Protection against victimization for all individuals who participated in the negotiation and advocacy process.
